Curral das Freiras (Nuns Valley) is a small parish, surrounded by huge mountains, in the heart of the island.

The name refers back to 1566 when nuns from Santa Clara Convent in Funchal sought refuge in this remote spot whilst French pirates attacked and pillaged their city.
